The dream of Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice began in 1998, with the vision to help families in this area who wanted an alternative to hospital care. Fundraising started when 11-year-old Richard and his mum wanted him to die at home.
In 2004, your support made our dream come true and we began to build the hospice. On 19th September 2008, we opened the doors to the first families who needed us.
Since then, you’ve helped us support hundreds of children from across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and parts of North Lincolnshire.
We’ve helped tired mums and dads get some much needed me-time; looked after brothers and sisters who are feeling angry, lonely or confused; and been there for families during the last moments of their child’s life.
Without you, our support over the years just wouldn’t have been possible: your donations have paid for every day trip, and funded every session of sensory play.
In September last year, we took a significant step forward by offering families the option to bring their child to Bluebell Wood after death, providing much-needed comfort during an incredibly difficult time. Since then, we’ve remained focused on our goal of developing a fully sustainable care model.
Now, thanks to your continued support, we can provide 24/7 end of life care for babies, children, and young people at the end of their lives in our catchment.
It takes £6.5 million to keep Bluebell Wood running each year and we are great full for every penny that is donated.
It costs almost £18,000 a day to keep our hospice doors open, and around 16% of that is government funded, so without your fantastic support, we simply couldn't do what we do.
Thank you.
